Effleurage ~ is a relaxing stroke. Once a gentle rhythm has been established, increasing pressure is used to prepare the body for deeper techniques. It warms the skin, helps illuminate toxins from the areas that have been worked and helps desquamation especially when used deeply, therefore helping the skin to regenerate. Assists lymph drainage and return over venus blood flow and pushed blood into the superficial capillaries
Petrissage ~ Fingers and/or hands knead and compress tissue against tissue in a firm, rhythmical stroke, using body weight and movement. This stretches the muscles, improving suppleness and elasticity and breaks down tension and stiffness in large muscles caused by the build up of toxins (such as lactic acid). Thus it helps muscles to work more effectively and stimulates circulation. Despite the firmness of the stroke it is more relaxing than invigorating because it releases muscle tightness and the toxins within.
Vibrations ~ One or both hands and/or finger tips. Brisk, firm pressure is applied, making the muscle tremble and shake in order to loosen tightness and release tension. Vibrations can help ease pain as it clears nerve pathways. It can be very soothing or stimulating depending on the desired result. It literally surprises the muscle into releasing its tension.
Frictions ~ Firm rubbing and heat producing technique compressing tissue against bone. Used for close work on areas of tension build up. Often used on specific area readying for deep tissue work. and for loosing tightness around joints. Helps to break down knots. Cross fibre friction helps stretch muscle fibres and release any tension held in the muscle
Percussion ~ A striking wake-up stroke. It has a stimulating, invigorating effect on tissues and improves local and overall circulation. It improves muscle tone because of the physical effects of the treatment, improved circulation, breaks down fat deposits in fleshy areas and invigorates the nerves
